The National Service Scheme (NSS) Unit
The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a Central Sector Scheme of Government of India, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports. It provides opportunity to the student youth of 11th & 12th Class of schools at +2 Board level and student youth of Technical Institution, Graduate & Post Graduate at colleges and University level of India to take part in various government led community service activities & programmes. The sole aim of the NSS is to provide hands on experience to young students in delivering community service. Since inception of the NSS in the year 1969, the number of students strength increased from 40,000 to over 3.8 million up to the end of March 2018 students in various universities, colleges and Institutions of higher learning have volunteered to take part in various community service programmes.   Volunteers may be involved in such activities as:
  • Cleaning
  • Afforestation
  • Stage shows or a procession creating awareness of such issues as social problems, education and cleanliness
  •  Awareness Rallies
  • Inviting doctors for health camps
  • Observation of important days
G.S. Lohia College, Tinsukia had the privilege of setting up its first NSS Unit from the academic session 2018-2019. The first leg of the programme was launched by an inauguration session which was conducted by Ms. Tanushree Sarkar, the NSS Unit Co-ordinator of Women's College, Tinsukia. There was huge enthusiasm amongst students for the programme and numerous applications were received seeking enrolment to this programme. Mr. Amit Agarwal (Assistant Professor) was entrusted with the responsibility to act as the co-ordinator for the NSS Unit in the college. Activities

Meraki 2.0 Meraki 2.0 which was organised by the NSS unit of GS Lohia College was a 7 day spectacular program starting from 28th of March. The first day was the opening ceremony where the students were divided into 8 teams of 11 members each. Thereafter the day was marked by a very exhilarating game. The second day held BID GREED which was a live auction. Students got the opportunity to experience a very gripping event and learn something new and special. The 3rd day was of project khuwaish where all the teams were asked to perform a social service activity in Tinsukia town. The teams were scattered all over the town serving the society by feeding stray dogs, helping the poor children, cleaning the town , visiting old age homes, street vendors and in many more ways. The 4th day was an extraordinary day for all the campers as they rallied to BHAWATI BHAGWAN HIGHER SECONDARY SCHOOL ,Balugada. The students of GSLGC interacted with the students of the school , played games with them, and taught them some valuable life lessons. Both the students of bhawati bhagwan higher secondary school and GSLGC got to learn something new and valuable from each other. The students of GSLGC created a restaurant like environment for the children and gave them a whole new experience filled with joy. Thereafter the students coloured some unpainted walls of the school. Not only the walls but the the students were able to paint some new colors in the lives of the children as well. On the 5th day Miss Meraki took place where each team had to pick one of the student from Bhawati Bhagwan and walk the ramp with them there each team showcased the culture of the different states of India. The teams went creative and gave it all they had. 3 teams were into the finals of which team " Boorbak Billi " Won the title of Miss Meraki along with a shining golden trophy. Following up with the 6th day, the students of our college were taken to a surprise location in Chowkham, Arunachal Pradesh where everybody enjoyed the tranquility, the food and the wholesome experience. The day was named as RIVIERA - The Beach Party. It was followed up by a closing ceremony on the last day of the camp where parents of both the campers and the students of Bhawati Bhagwan along with the campers and students were invited. Every participant was appreciated with a certificate of participation and special awards were also distributed.The team "Boorbak Billi" took home the trophy of the MERAKI MAGICIANS.
